POST-COURIER (Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea) 15 January 07 Killer croc shot by police
The seven-metre-long crocodile that killed a woman in North Bougainville a fortnight ago was shot dead by police at the weekend.
The killer reptile was spotted on Friday at around midday by villagers, about the same time of day as when it tragically ended Martina Tewei’s life at the mouth of Tasui River.
The mother of four and some other women — including her daughter — had gone from Siara village to the area to collect shells and mud crabs when she met her fate.
The crocodile had been waiting among felled logs that villagers used to cross the river.
On that fateful day, Mrs Tewei was crossing the river when the huge reptile swept her off with its tail and killed her.
Parts of her body which the villagers had discovered include her waist, one leg and other organs. On Friday, the reptile was seen at the same spot.
Police were called in and with the help of the locals built two trap walls at the mouth of the river.
The huge crocodile broke the first trap wall and was making its way out when it got embedded in the second wall.
It took more than an hour for the armed police, who used a full M16 rifle magazine, to finally silence the reptile in its fiery fight back. An outboard motor was used to tow the reptile up the river before it was lifted onto the trailer of a truck by more than 30 men.
The crocodile carcass was brought to Siara village, the home of the dead woman’s brother, Peter Barik.
It was later operated on by Buka General Hospital doctors Mathias Tovilu and Jeffery I’iau.
They confirmed after the operation that it was the crocodile that had killed Mrs Tewei. Her body parts which were found inside the crocodile’s stomach include her hair, skull, leg and bones.
Her necklace and black shirt were also recovered from the alligator’s foul smelling stomach.
Mr Barik and other village elders claimed during their interview at Siara that this was one of the many reptiles looked after by an Australian crocodile farmer who had lived in the area since the 1960s until the 1989 crisis.
