Can anyone identify this frog for me?

Jeannie Aug 09, 2003 09:52 PM

My kids and I were fishing at Martis Lake (off Hwy. 267 just by the Truckee/Lake Tahoe, CA airport) and we came across a frog that has me completely stumped. It was sitting at the mouth of a burrow about 30' from the water. I'd guess it had a body length of 3-4". It was distinctly reddish in color all over (dorsally), and had a black mask or stripe that ran through both eyes to the nostrils. I've looked in my field guide (Stebbins) and can't find anything that looks like it. We didn't want to disturb it, so I don't know what it looked like underneath. If it helps any, it was the most placid frog I've ever seen--completely undisturbed that we were all standing over it!

Sorry, I don't have any pics to post. Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Jeannie

I'm very familiar with Pacific Treefrogs, and this wasn't one. It was much bigger, more the size of a Red-legged.
