New Sinaloan!

reptilicus81 Jan 15, 2007 05:05 PM

I just bought a hatchling Sinaloan! I am really a boid girl myself, but as a teacher, always wanted a tricolor to discuss mimicry! I had my heart set on a Mexican or a Nelson's. They had two Mexican's but they were both very unhappy about my handling them and were musking all over my hands. The sinaloan was very calm and won me over. I will post some pictures when I get a chance! This is probably a dumb question as well, but is it "sin-a-loan" or "sin-a-lo-an"....or something different?

Graet looking pics. My daughter has a yearling Sinaloan. They are great snakes. Still a bit jumpy @ handling time. Is your Sinaloan an '06? From the pics your snake pretty big hatchling.

keep handling every day or two. my nelson's hatchling was pretty spooky at first (after 5-7 days relaxation time after i took her home from the swap)

now she'll sit still for minutes at a time in my hand, and when she's not doing that she calmly explores between my fingers.

Amy,
Strange to hear that you had the bad experience with the baby Mexicans - when I was looking, I asked and almost everyone who got back to me said pretty much the same thing, that Mexicans were probably the most calm babies, along with Black Milks.
Of all th babies I looked at the day I got ours, all the Peublans, Nelsons and event the Hondurans were jumpy and freaked out. But the little Mexican I picked, he was calm and cool when I held him, he seemed very comfortable being handled. I never musked, bit or tried to jump away.
My wife loves his calm but curious disposition, and he eats like a champ!
Your Sinaloan is beautiful, it sounds like a great addition to your collection.

BTW, since you want to teach about mimicry, there is a great photo by David travis in Robert Applegate's book The General Care and Maintenance of Milk snakes of a Mexican Coral Snake (Micrurus distans) from the Cosala area in Mexico. This is the coral snake that the Sinaloan mimics.
Above the photo of the coral snake is a photo of a Sinaloan from the same locale. The comparison is remarkable.

Thanks! I will look that one up! I thought the same about the Mexicans, but than again I only had two to choose from, they probably would have calmed down once they got used to handling, but the sinaloan was just too good to pass up!

You sure picked out a beauty. You won't be disappointed with that snake. Sinaloans are wonderful animals!

Good luck.

Thanks! It is funny that I walked out of the reptile store with a hatchling sinaloan, as I walked in completely positive that I wanted a subadult Mexican or Nelsons! I really love all of the red, and it was much calmer than the others, who musked all over me. Once I get it eating I will be handling it often, as I want to use it for educational demos when it is a bit larger.

Thanks again!
