Breeding Season Photos

sideman7 Jan 15, 2007 05:28 PM

I decided to take some photos of Dexter today since his colors were so nice, and he has been following me all around the house (without trying to kill me- which is an odd change of pace...). I did include one photo with my hand to give some idea of scale.

Enjoy!

Thanks! He will be seven in May (and he is about 5' and 12lbs). He has been a hand full at times. Usually in breeding season he is a complete monster, fortunately, this time around he has been the exact opposite.

Very nice! Whats his care like i.e housing, humidity, feeding (you can just say MK Salad or the site you base your feeding off). Type of lighing? Thanks my boy is also very good looking for his age only 2 1/2 and i hope his spikes become tall and standing up like yours. One of the nicest ive seen for an indoor Iguana.

Thanks, I have a small 5'x5'x2.5' plexiglass enclosure that functions as his home base. It's too small for him really, but he is free to roam when I am home, and during most of the year he gets time outside in the sun. Humidity: next to none - I am in Las Vegas. He hates the bathtub, so his only "wet" time is when he gets hosed down outside. Food: basically MK salad. Veggies and greens with fruit treats here and there. Right now he is exhibiting some really bizarre (for him) breeding season behavior and hardly eating anything at all. He sits on his food dish. I am giving him water (with a spray bottle - at least he is drinking it) since he is hardly eating anything. If he doesn't eat anything in three days, I "help" him (open his mouth) and feed him a collard green (which he will eat once you get him started). He has other things on his mind... I have no idea why his spikes generally look so good. They are more mashed up than usual now since he has been so rambunctious lately.

Ok so on the feeding never has he had any part of his diet animal protein right? I have seen so meny iguanas that have been fed animal protein here and there and are full grown and look fine. Though i still have NEVER fed mine any animal protein and do fully beleive they do not eat anything like that in wild. Im definitly going to get the ball rolling on getting an outdoor sunning cage. Can i see yours?

Thanks for the pics and reply i really appreciate!

No animal protein. There is no need for it, and it's not a good idea. For protein, I grind up alfalfa hay and sprinkle it on his food.

I had an outdoor cage for him when he was much younger (and smaller) that I made from PVC pipe and coated chicken wire. I haven't used it in years though. I have an enclosed yard now, and he is big enough that I just let him out when he goes to the door. I always keep and eye on him when he is out though (I don't need him climbing up any of the trees...). When he's had enough he comes back to the door and I let him in.
