hatchling gbk regurgitating food

rs2051 Jan 15, 2007 06:37 PM

i bought a hatchling blair's phase gray banded king last week at the ny reptile show. it is an active snake that willingly and aggressively ate a frozen thawed pinky on sunday. thurs it ate another one and then a few hours later vomited it back up and the same thing yest. i have only offered it mice when i see that it has had a bowel movement and as stated, aggressively attacks the mice. it is in a tank with a heating pad underneath, a cave to hide in. my apart temp is in the 70's and the mice were well thawed. i have had no problems feeding the others: a clown king, an az mtn king, as well as feeding pinkies to my veiled's. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, the snake may not take well to feedings more than one feeding per week. Some do and some don't. Also, consider how big the pinkies are as well. Graybands can be small as babies, so for some, one normal pinky is a pretty hefty meal, and given more than that in less than a week or so may be a little too much for his tummy to handle.
One really important thing to note is that if your snake regurges, give him at least 10 days before you try feeding again. It has to have time to retain the stomach acid that it lost in the regurgitation and if you keep trying to feed it within 2-3 days after it last fed and regurged, it only makes it worse and the snake could eventually die.
IMO, do not feed him until at least 10 more days and then, feed it the smallest pinky you can find or if they are frozen, cut one in half and offer it. The trick is to build up the food size small and steady after a snake regurges. If he is able to get back on track with a normal feeding schedule, I would feed him once every 6-7 days.
