Mealworm breeding question.. big and small beetles

shihao Aug 09, 2003 10:09 PM

Hi,

How can I tell which beetles are male or female? I actually have 4 large ones in some oatmeal substrate and one small one (about 1/5 size of the other 4). I'm hoping I'll have some mealworms in the near future.

Thanks,

Tom S. T.

I don't know. I've been trying to figure out how to sex them too. I found pictures online but you have to have a magnifying glass to see it...and then, it all looked the same to me!! LOL! Do a search for "tenebrio molitor" and you should find the sexing directions I found. If you figure it out, please tell us! LOL!

I cant tell whether they are male or female myself. If you are interested I have a mealworm care/breeding page on my website, if you'd like to look at it. If you have any Q's just drop me an email.

I just keep a bunch of mealworms together in a plastic shoe box. 12 quart or smaller, same goes for the beetles. After they pupate I just put the beetles into the box that they will breed in. With all the beetles I have there has to be females, cuz I get so many mealworms I dont know what to do with! LOL

After you get your colony on a roll, you'll always have a supply of mealworms. Very rarely do I ever have to buy online anymore.

Hi,

How many beetles do you have in your colony to keep it going strong? Did you mean that you separate the beetles from the mealworms or do you keep them all together?
I'd like to breed my own and am looking for as much info as i can get
Thanks
