Breeding BRB ?s

senorsnake Jan 15, 2007 11:09 PM

We breed boas and are just getting into BRBs, my question is what is the length/weight requirements for breeding females are. I heard 5' and over 3.5 lbs.. and that sounds so small to me. I'm used to the bci's who are quite heavy bodied.. i just wanted to double check.

Brazilian Rainbows can be bred at two and a half years of age if the females are large enough and have enough weight. A female should be at least five feet long and weigh over three pounds. Another six inches of length and pound of weight is more appropriate and should produce a larger first litter with less strain on the snake-from Jeff's website

Senorsnake,
...3.5 pounds and 5.33 feet long is probably a good minimum size for breeding females. Bigger is better. Most of them need to be more than 24 months old to be mature. I do see lots of inflated Boa Constrictor weights over on the Boa Forum.

Thank you for your responses.. and I agree, some boas are definately made too thick! Its just different dealing with rainbows for the first time, since they're naturally more slender. Just wanted confirmation that 5 lbs was a health prebreeding weight.
