thinking about getting a children's

frostypaws Jan 16, 2007 10:26 AM

I read the article in this months Reptiles about the Children's python and what really interested me is their small size. I've been wanting to get another snake (I have a ball and a corn), but I don't have much room for one because of the two snakes I already have. I'm only 19, a mostly broke college student who lives with her parents. That being said, what is the availability of Children's, and how much will it cost me? Also, what is your experience with Children's been like?

I feel you have selected an excellent animal. Antaresa can be a very rewarding species to work with. That may be a personal opinion, but I truely enjoy them. Currently I only have Stimsons pythons, which are a closely related cousin of the Childrens. I hear babies can be a little bit "nippy" but their bites would be nothing. All that I have worked with have been very easy to handle, and they all ate great. You can expect to spend anywhere between $60-125, depending who you purchase from and what time of the year you are buying.

Hope that helps a bit

Like the other person, I also haven't had a Children's python but i also have a close relative called a Spotted python (which look so much the same that they are often confused for each other). I was also thinking about a children's python, but they don't keep their colors and spots as they age. But other than that, i have 2 spotteds a male and female. My female is a sweety and can be handled by me and anyone else. I bring her with me to my reptile meetings at a science musuem where there are small children and she has NEVER bit anyone. My male on they other hand... bits anything and everything. Male came from a online pet store and female from a private owner.
Long story short, get from a private breeder if possible

ps. never had any problems feeding mine when i got them (and they were shipped)

pps. the pic is an old pic of my female... picture quality sucks, i know

I've always loved my Childreni We have loads of them! We also have their smaller relatives the Anthill python.

They're not a shy snake like the Ball Python, they're usually wandering around and checking things out in their various enclosures except when they're shedding and then they're just cranky and want to just be left alone.

We've had a single one that was 'nippy' as a baby but that cooled down immediately with handling. I've been bitten by the little ones a number of times when waking up at 6am to put them into their deli cups to take them to a show... Nice warm hands reaching into their rack space to wake them up make really nice targets! It's not painful and they don't hang on.

They're generally easy-going and easy to house.

You can see our adults here http://www.tinypythons.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=5

Good luck!

I have an '05 Childrens python. I got her in Sept of '05. She was very nippy, but has calmed down into a great snake. I've heard from folks whose babies were fine right from the start and others who took a while to calm down. As pythons go they are alert, not shy w/ plenty of personality. Definitely worth getting one. I got mine for $80, but I see the babies now for $125. Good luck.

Actually they're antaresia maculosa. Close enough. They're a super easy snake. Just keep a bit warmer than corn snakes and you're all set. My adult male is as tame as you could hope for. He didn't start out that way. Same thing with my little one. They were both terrified of me to start with, but now that they know me they're very calm and inquisitve.

I think they're also very intelligent. Mine have learned to associate the feeding container with food even though they had been fed in the cage. Only took a couple of months.

Oh, and they're oh-so-squishy and soft. Their skin feels like silk.

How long did it take for yours to get that big? The one in the second pic. I can't wait for mine to max out in size ^_^ You've got some nice ones.

I really don't know how fast he got that size. I bought him when he was 5 years old. Sorry.

Yours are nice too. Very light and nice contrast. I hope my little one looks like that when she gets bigger. Where did you get them?

Black_Wolf Jan 23, 2007 04:26 PM

both were found in kingsnakes classified. the female came from someone's personal collection. was going through some hard times and needed money. the male i got from someone named Gary K. He breed "Hotdog" himself. Hoping next year to breed them. the male's het. granite. yays....
