Red tail green rat snake

srsb Jan 16, 2007 12:25 PM

I am looking for some more information on this snake. I saw one at a reptile show this weekend and was blown away with how beautiful he was. In speaking to others at the show (more knowledgeable than myself), I was told that the snake, which was wild caught, would likely not live long, that they have a reputation for being difficult to keep, and temperamental, and best for experienced snake owners.

I have several other rat snakes (normal wild-caught, and a leucistic Texas rat) and am wondering how different the requirements for the red tail are.

Also, if anyone is captive breeding them?

Any information would be appreciated. I have Googled and found a little information, but thought I would come here to see if anyone has some first hand knowledge to share.

Thanks!!

They are all I keep, along with another Gonyosoma spp. (see signature).

I'm busy as heck but will gladly share what I know. I have collected a lot of papers and even one book on this species, mostly translated from European keepers who have had much better success with this genus. A friend of mine is consolidating much of that information and putting it on his website. I don't have the URL handy.

There are a few breeders in the US but not a lot.
