Mealworms in cage....

tsusnakeguy Jan 16, 2007 03:31 PM

I volunteer at a zoo and a few months ago I finally found out what a mealworm turns into....a little black beetle. So I took a few beetles home to see if my Savannah would eat them. Well he didn’t but I just never took them out because they didn’t bother anything. I started to notice though for the longest time I was not seeing and feces from my monitor. Well today I look and I have a bunch of mealworms cleaning up after my monitor. I am wondering if anyone has gotten their monitor to eat mealworms before. I am thinking of leaving some in there to tidy up and maybe he can snack on if he sees them crawling around. I know I will probably get some replies talking about how irresponsible I am but you know what I find it kind of neat and my monitor seems to be perfectly healthy.

I feed my monitors mealworms often, but then again, I try my best to gutload them. A meal of crap-filled mealworms might not be very healthy lol. I would not let the mealworms "clean up", but you should be able to get him to eat some. Does he have anything he associates with food? Mine will eat anything on the end of a pair of tongs.

I feed mine superworms (gutloaded) as well as other things. The worms that don't get eaten I have seen people refer to as "the clean-up crew" and so they are a good thing. I get a few of those morphed beetles in there but mine won't touch them either - I don't know of anyone yet whose monitor will.

The only animal I have that will hit those black beetles is my Tokay Gecko! He loves them!

My sav and beardies used to eat them. I now have super worms instead of regular meal worms.
