SAHARAN SICK?

bob_the_snowman Aug 09, 2003 10:39 PM

Hello, we just recently (this past week) received two groups of saharan uros, one pair (yellow) and the other pair (red) . The red uros seem to have a quite a bit of meat on them, but the yellow guys are extremely thin, we saw them eat a bit and we've actually had to force feed them a bit becuz they had no interest in it what so ever. We were just wondering what kind of attitute or personality does Saharans have, we have 3 malis who are very active and run all over the place, but the Saharans dont seem very active, they just seem to sleep alot. I have no problem if they're just lazy but I just want to make sure that they're not sick..Have any suggestions?

Hum if you just got them they are probably just really tired from the stress of the trip. I have two saharans right now, rico is really fat, he eats in the AM and is out until maybe 1 or 2 PM, then he sleeps and he might come out again at night but not for long. He's a bit lazy, the other is my new girl, she actually came and had a runny stool, so ASAP i took her to the vet. She has a possible bacterial infection, perscribed flagyl and is way better already. She ate however from day one. As long as they have no runny stools, or anything terribly out of the ordinary i wouldn't worry too much. Rico didn't eat for almost a week after i got him, the girl ate within one hour. It all depends. My girl also looks super skinny, she weighs in a 71 grams, and i just recieved her two days ago. Rico is weighing in at 128 grams, he's about 1 1/2 years old and still growing. Wild caughts don't really come with alot of weight and it might take a few weeks or a few monthes. Good luck and take them to a vet for a full checkup if you want to be sure.
I hope you have fun with your new additions, sorry for the long post...

With the majority of the Saharans being wild caught and relatively fresh imports you may see a host of problems associated with them. They are of course very stressed by the time you get them. Many have parasite loads that are exacerbated by the stress and get out of control. The problem that occurs is that if the animal is not eating and you give them worming medications, the meds are hard on their system. Give them a little time to adjust, watch your temps, their stools etc. Hopefully in a few days to a week they will start eating. Sometimes they actually do eat a little, just not in front of you. Good luck, I hope everything turns out well for you. Keep us posted.
