What does everyone feed their mice?

strictly4fun Jan 16, 2007 05:04 PM

I have been using Kaytee Forti-Diet for hamsters (green bag) for awhile now but I am wondering if they have something better that would make them grow faster? I only use this because this is what the local petstores use and the food has a variety of stuff to go through, so they seem to like it.

I feed only lab blocks, they seem to do fine on them. Forget the exact formulation, standard stuff I get from another rodent breeder. Use it for all my rodents. Overhead hoppers and little waste.

I also use a hamster mix which includes a variety of grains, nuts and also some dog treats and cat food, I get it for 56 cents a pound in a 40 pound bag. Although I breed only small scale.

I use TEKLAD rodent diet. I used to use the Purina Lab Diet, rodent diet but the feed store I bought it from went out of bussiness and I had to start special ordering it. I think most commercial rodent diets should be fairly comperable though. I aslo give them Timothy hay as a treat (They really seem to like it) and supplement their food with a variety of fruits and vegetables. Broccoli and apples always seem to be the first things eaten.
A few years ago I fed strickly the cheapest dog food that I could find. They ate it fine, but I decided to start spending a little more since the more nutrition my rats got, the more the snakes would get. SInce the switch I have noticed that the breeder rats and mice do seem healthier and longer lived.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I am going to get some lab blocks I believe.
