Yet another - Coral Question

rainbowsrus Jan 16, 2007 06:39 PM

If I understand "coral" correctly, the "coral" is related to seperate gene(s) than the actual Albino gene. The coral gene(s) being a modifier/amplifier of red in an albino.

Question is, If you have a female het coral albino bred to an albino (non-coral) Assuming the het coral albino does throw some percentage coral albinos, would some of the non-albino babies also have the coral trait? Of course they would be het albino from the father.

How would you describe them, Het albino possible coral?

Dave,

The Coral trait is not a gene it is a trait. It is a trait independent of the albino gene.

It has been observed that the Coral trait is and may be connected to the Pastel trait.

That is why there are different degrees of Coral Expression. You may have a very low or high expression of coraling on each individual animal within the litter.

Yes,when a Coral albino or Het Coral is bred to a (plain) Albino or het albino....Some of the babies will be Coral. The non albino babies will be 100% het Albino's Poss Coral.

When selling the babies it is always a good idea to show one of the Coral Albino siblings for proof,or the Coral parent even if it is a het. Some people can usually see the Coraling under the normal pattern if you know what to look for. Hope this helps.

I see hets in the classifieds that are regular, plain Jane looking Boas, sold as "Coral" with a price tag that is a little higher than a regular het. Then there are regular hets for sale now and then that have a decent amount of red showing. If you want red Albinos, buy either a red Albino, and/or red hets. It's really about the RED, not the Coral, or name/bloodline. What I'm trying to say is, they can call it "Coral", or whatever they want, names schmames, if it doesn't show the red.. it can't pass something on it doesn't have..
A Rose is a Rose.. but the reverse is also true.
