American Gator Health Questions

quickdrawm249 Jan 16, 2007 07:34 PM

I recently bought two American Alligator hatchlings and had some worries about their health. They are not eating as much as they should be eating, and their bodies are beginning to atrophy, showing excess skin in places like the back of their necks and around their bellies. Their eyes are never fully open, most of the time half closed. They are very inactive spending most of the time just floating in the water or basking on the turtle dock.

I have them housed in a 90 gallon aquarium with another gator that I had for about a few weeks before I got these two. He is doing great, and is what brings my concern for these two. The water temperature is at 80F and the daytime basking area gets up to the mid to high 90s directly under the light and high 80s elsewhere on the land. At night directly under the light is mid 80s and low 80s elsewhere.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I just wish these two would do as good as my first one.

Dont know if I can help but I have some questions how did thay look when you first got them, what is the size deferens between the firt one you had,how do thay get along and are ther places thay can hide if thay feel threatened?? If I was you I would put the two new ones in a defrent tank like a 40 gal long for reasons like in case thay have some thing mediclly wrong with them that thay can transmit too the helthy one and it would be easer too keep an eye on just them and ther would be less stress from the helthy one geting in ther way.Hope this helps if not I know some one els on the forum probably can.

The size difference is only about an inch difference from the healthy one and the two I'm concerned about. I have fake plants for them to hide in like grass along the backside of their basking area. They looked pretty good when I got them, I checked to see if they had full bellies and the guy told me they were eating but who knows if thats true or not. Thanks for you help.
