feeding kenyans question

bsg915 Jan 16, 2007 10:24 PM

I'm going to be getting a kenyan in the next couple days. The only enclosure I have is 4x2x2. the animal is about 12.5". so my question is, when i feed it, should I just let the mouse sit in there til it finds it on its own, since I probably won't know where the snake is, or put the snake in a box with a mouse? and if I put a live mouse in the cage will the kenyan be able to get it with easy or will the mouse just turn the new large space into a home?

I wouldn't leave a live mouse in with any small snake. If your kenyan isn't hungry, the mouse could injure him.
Put a hide box or something that the animal can get used to and leave a prekilled mouse under that. He may not eat right away but after a few times of this he'll get used to being fed in this one spot and look there for food.
I usually just hold the mouse by the tail and dangle it over a feading whole made by the snake. In that large enclosure, he'll probably make a few of these and when hunting/hungry you will usually see the tip of his head at this whole.(assuming you use a substrate that allows burrowing). all in all they very good eaters, but expect to have some periods of fasting (especially if male).
