I have two pics for comparison: (first pic is mom - second pic are the two babies. Note that the head pattern on mom's spear point in the center of her head has an opening. The two babies have the same exact head pattern and the opening is facing the same direction as the mother's,lol)

Well, this is the most recent pic of the only two babies that hatched with no red. Looks as if they are slowly changing into the golden colors... My 13 year old son took this pic a few days ago. I am still overseas for a little while longer. But I will be back soon to take some more, high quality pics. I still have not seen these babies for myself yet except in these pics!

Can't wait to get HOME!!!

My internet keeps shutting off on me, so I forgot to re-post the pics....
Well, here's mom (first) and the two babies:

Is that for real?

For us newbies, exactly what makes a Golden?

goregrind Jan 17, 2007 02:11 PM

it an un-proven trait. zee cought "the original golden" and bred her to a male caught in the same area and has been trying to prove her out since

But how would you describe it genetically? That gold color is a result of what traits?

STEVES_KIKI Jan 17, 2007 03:45 PM

NO ONE KNOWS FOR SURE. its obviously the loss of red, but the known trait is caramel, amber, etc. as for the golden, she was wild caught as is and so far, well, until recently the only one known to man. until the 2 babies popped out of her clutch. its very interesting and breeding trials ARE in the makes. the 2 babies seen here were just born a few months ago and look like momma. its a possibility her son, who was bred back to her but no breeding was ever SEEN could have fathered these babies. BUT another male was introduced to her as well from around the same area goldie was found... so as of right now its unknown and we are calling them goldens. this is just a lil of what i have picked up from the stories here and there. but Zee could probably tell the story better and correctly. but i think thats what we have so far I LOVE THEM!!! THEY ARE GOING UP NICELY

That was pretty correct what you said... The only reason I introduced the other locality male, was because I had a feeling that her son had NO interest in her as he was always making attempts at getting out of the cage to get away from her until many days later when he settled down enough to actually sleep next to her (but that seems like that is all he did). I didn't want to risk waiting another year so: Towards the end of the breeding season I put that 5 foot wildcaught male (that I found only about a hundred yards from where I found her) in there and he went to work on her IMMEDIATELY! Like I said, she laid a lot of eggs (16), but only four of them were fertile. Out of those four I got two with NO red and the other two with lots of red...I'm thankful just to have two that are looking very promising.

Are either of those hatchlings male? If so, that would be as helpful any other crossing, since any non-golden corn produced by such a pairing would eliminate the possibility of simple recessivity.

Outstanding animals!

Thanks
It's funny that you'd mention that, for I do not know what sex they are yet. Nobody in my household knows how to probe snakes except for me, and I have been overseas before those little ones were even laid... But I will know very soon, since my time over here is almost up, (I can' wait, lol)!

I know you've been overseas (and THANK YOU again, by the way!) all this time. I didn't realize that no one had sexed the babies for you yet.

What a surprize you have waiting for you, Huh?!?

Let us know, when you can, Zee!

so if we assume that the wc male is the father then ethier he has the golden gene (recessive) or the golden gene is co-dominant (how cool would that be!!). Are there any other codom genes out there other than ultra with amel for corn snakes?

BlueKing Jan 18, 2007 08:03 PM

Good point.
I am wondering about that myslef. Of course the only thing that DOES make this a mystery is the fact that the WC male was found almost exactly at the same spot as the golden one. But I should ( hopefully) have an answer to that by this fall...

I only wish I could stumble onto some outrageous mutations like that, instead of the typical junk!!!. Looks to be "hyperxanthic", as well as "anerythristic", in a weird progressive way !!.....VERY NICE!! I know you don't want to disclose the "EXACT" location obviously, but was it in the South Florida area? The reason I ask, is the "Miami" type looking background(not meaning they all come only from Miami).Anyway, that is one corny Cornsnake!!(LOL)......................Doug PS I posted this W/C "Miami" on a previous post. It was caught just above Miami in Broward County.

I really didn't mean that literally, I sometimes get bored of seeing nothing but Black Racers(Coluber c. priapus) around my area. Unfotunately, there is proof of many beautiful types of snakes in my area, the bad part is that I see most of these snakes dead on the road(DOR), which is pretty sad....... Oh!!!!, thanks for reminding me guys, I did have the good fortune of catching that sweet Cornsnake I took the "shedding closeup" of across the street though!!!. She is a very pretty, bright colored individual that I plan to introduce into some of my other breeding stock. In any case, yes, any snake is a good snake I agree!!(LOL)............................Doug

Thanks...
Been waiting for many years and many miles of herping to find something special (kind of like the "big one that didn't get away". AND NO, it's NOT a Florida animal, sorry. I DID find it about six miles from my house here in SE NC!!!
And corn snakes are VERY COMMON here, so that helps, too!
(Pic of a very red example found only about a mile from where the golden one was found)
