As for lighting you will need something that the monitor can get its whole body under to bask. At the same time you want to be able to maintain a temp gradient, so you don't want anything that will heat the rest of the cage too much. I go would go with halogen floods. They have a broad area and can maintain a temps high enough to bask without adding excessive heat to rest of the cage. These can be found at most home improvment stores for about $4 each. I am using 90 watt ones right now. I have no idea about your enclosure or temps outside it, so only you and a temp gun can determine what is needed. As for UV, what is the reason you are chosing to use it? It had deffinatly proven shown that UV is not needed to reach any life events for a monitor or folling generations, and I'm not aware of anything documented that UV has shown to make anything better than those without. So you would basically be wasting money and using it for you, not the monitor. Stick to what has actually been proven and avoid the heresay. Hope this helps. -Jeff

Dude, who are you??? Wasn't it you that about only a year ago was argueing that cypress was a good substrate for Argus and no matter what anyone said you held your ground? Didn't you also start claiming to have produce this and that, but unfortunatly didn't have a camera to take even one pic of any of it? Then after being straight checked on it, you jumped on some nutz, started responding almost exactaly like others, and adding "cheers" at the end of your posts. Are you european, because I highly doubt that when a buddy leaves your house you tell him cheers. Your intentions and husbandry may be good enough to produce some argus, but you are fake as a person. I've been putting it to practice for a little over 3 years, and never once claimed to do anything that I couldn't back up with pictures, like you. I have never produced a single monitor, but am deffinatly working on it. I accept what is out there and proven, and try to get to that level. Think about it guy, and re-read the post. I only said that it has been proven again and again that it isn't necessary. Is that not true? I never once said it was proven by me, but will say it is proven. I also said that I'm not aware of anything documented that shows benefits for monitors, which I'm not aware of. Like I said, you have my respect for doing something that I haven't by producing something, but you don't as a person. I guess that's what being online allows you to do. Take it how you want. -Jeff

that is funny man. as far as what i produce, i still continue to do so, as a matter of fact i have more argus hatchlings along the way, kimberly eggs will be hatching in a few weeks and....

as far as cheers...i am not european, i lived there during my teenage years when i played hockey, and i do say cheers to my friends, so cheers.

if you can't produce monitors then something is wrong and you shouldn't be giving a tid of advice, because producing monitors is easy, its the other crap i have a hard time with like getting good substrates, etc.

so, again, cheers

and no, i have never used cypress, but what would it matter?

the best substrate i have seen is one called sandy lome

i have never recommended anything but dirt, but that seems to equal or top it
