Guyana Rainbows

viborero Jan 17, 2007 10:02 AM

I have been offered some Guyanas as part of a trade. I cannot find very much info on them. Are they much different to house than Brazilians (aside from the obvious size difference)?

Any tips, help, links and/or pics appreciated!!

Thanks,

Diego,
..I kept my Guyanan Rainbows just like I keep other smaller Rainbow subspecies. Temperatures from low 70s at one end of the cage to low 80s at the other end. Humidity needs to be kept above 50% most of the time. A plastic sweater size storage box makes an ideal cage for them. They were imported in large numbers and that combined with their plain coloration kept prices low for them.

Youval,
...Your English is outstanding. I only had one litter of Guyanan Rainbows. They looked like baby Colombian and Brazilian Rainbows except that their color was browner and they had the stripes on the sides of their necks like the adult Guyanans. They were a little smaller also, perhaps around 13 or 14 inches rather than the 15 to 18 inches of baby Colombians and Brazilians. My litter of babies was picky about taking their first meals. They did all eventually eat but several of them had small lizards for their first meal before they went long enough for me to worry about them or be sure that they would not have eventually taken a live fuzzy of hopper mouse. Your PICs are beautiful. Where did the snakes come from?

youval,
...Thank you for posting such good photos of your Guyanans. Looking around the internet there are not many PICs of them anywhere. Your female looks nice and gravid. Has she eaten anything since she started looking gravid? Most Rainbow Boas eat very little or not at all while they are gravid. I do not remember if my Guyanan ate while gravid or not.
...I know there are other people in Israel keeping Rainbow Boas. Some of my Brazilians went to Israel in 1998 or 1999. I have also gotten a couple of emails from Israelis who have Brazilians and Colombians and wanted to know about breeding them.

youval,
...My only litter of Guyanan Rainbows was born in 1993. They were being imported here in the US in large numbers at that time and prices were too low to make any money breeding them. Recently they are not being imported so much and prices are typically around $100 for them here.

Diego,
....Mine reproduced when they were around 40 to 44 inches in length and I have never seen one larger than 4 feet long. My guess is that maximum size is probably less than 5 feet. Newly imported ones will usually bite but like all Rainbow Boas they are easily tamed.

Josh,
...Your snakes have way too much Brazilian Rainbow boa, Epicrates cenchria cenchria, pattern to be full Guyanans. My guess is that your snakes are either full Brazilians or crosses between Brazilians and Guyanans. Where did you get them? Have a look at the PICs that youval posted to see how his Guyanans (which are like all the Guyanans I have seen) have striping along the sides rather than the dark spots with bright crescents above them which are more typical of Brazilians. The pattern along the back also looks slightly more like the Brazilians. Can you post some PICs showing closer and better detail of the markings on the snakes? Also, how old and how long are your snakes?

Josh,
..If you get a minute measure them. If they are much over 4 feet long that almost certainly identifies them as not being full Guyanans.
