So i heard that to make breeders no smell like ammonia that you can put vanilla extract into their water, has anyone heard/tried this before

However, it just cuts it down. It doesn't elimate it. But there is a definite difference.

what ratio do you use water to extract? and does the imitation stuff work or d you need the reall extract?

is what I have done in the past. However, RFlagg is correct about "stuff" growing and your sippers can suffer over the long term of build up if not cleaned often. It does work, but there is a price to pay in cleaning. I don't recalling using extract, I thought it was pure vanilla, it wasn't very viscous at all. This isn't the best method to use for an automatic watering system which I use now instead of water bottles hence the reason I stopped using the vanilla method. My water system is completely automated and I don't have to fill a 5 gallon bucket up. I do have a vanilla delivery system in place but don't use it at all. It works the same way an air oiler would in a liquid service. I bring in water off the tap, regulate it down, deliver to the rats tubs. It does have its own drawbacks however, if you get a leaky valve, you loose a whole tub etc.

I've tried the vanilla extract thing, and it made no noticeable difference. It DID, however, cause all kinds of nasty gunk to grow in the water bottles.
