First season breeding, I have questions?

johnavilla Jan 18, 2007 10:11 AM

First, blood trails generally mean that a breeding has occurred, correct? Also, the other night I opened the tub my pair was in to check on them and the female hissed and tightened her coils to the point that the hide box they were in lifted a few inches. I'm pretty sure it was the female because she hates me and all other life and does this every third or fourth time I open her tub and the male has never hissed. At any rate I am concerned about my male being damaged. His tail seems tender (he recoils if I touch it) but the amount of blood in the tub this morning was minimal and I didn't see any swelling or obvious visible signs of damage so I am wondering what the more experienced think. Thanks in advance for any info.

male has lost or injured a hemipene. Blood trails just mean a breeding has occurred, correct? There will be much more blood in the instance of castration, right? Details above. Thanks in advance for responses.

I am no expert but i believe it is from breeding. Im sure he is fine. I would think the area would be a little touchy considering how long they usually stay locked.

that's pretty much what I thought but it helps to hear someone say it, um, read what others write. Hopefully a few more will post and put my mind fully at ease.

Blood trails Do Not denote copulation. Sometimes when pairs are put together youll see the females almost instantly start bleeding and wagging their tails. It is an invitation to the male to get workin. Ive watched my females roam their cage while bleeding for hours immediately after introducing them.

If you want a semi reliable indication of copulation then look under the females tail at the cloaca. If the cloaca is folded in some, that usualy indicates copulation has taken place. This is not always apparent and therefore cannot be the only sign to denote whether copulation has happened. You wont always see the folded cloaca. At the same time a folded cloaca does not guarentee pregnancy whatsoever.

Good luck.
