Hello I have anine month old male leopard gecko. I recently moved him from a ten gallon to a twenty and i have noticed he is trying to dig and rip the paper towels inside of his hides, why is this?

Are you absolutely certain he's male? Admittedly I'm not the expert on this particular behavior, but my understanding was that females were much more likely to do that (typically in an effort to find/create a spot for eggs, and yes, they can sometimes do this w/o actually being exposed to a male, the eggs (usually egg, in the case of no males to breed with) will just be infertile). However, 9 months seems a bit young for that to happen, so maybe he has just decided to remodel his living space. My experience says that they'll sometimes rearrange things in their terrariums in a way that they like better than how you initially set it up. Mine sure likes to knock over her plants to create an awning in front of her cool side hide anyway .
