clear tubes

zach_whitman Jan 18, 2007 10:02 PM

OK where do people find clear plastic tubes? like the kind usually used to handle venemous snakes. The home depot, lows, and local hardware guys don't have anything like that. Aside from snake handling what the heck else would those be used for?
cheers

heres a random pick of the best hatchling rack I've ever used...

Years ago I found a plastics company that had a huge variety of clear plastic tubes. I bought hundreds of feet of it and shared it with a bunch of my zoo colleagues. I never did ask what else it was used for. Good question.

Regardless, I got it pretty cheap given I bought so much of it. But later when I got the basic kit from Midwest I prefered that. Their tubes are more expensive but I liked how they were slightly flexible. For some especially spastic venomous I felt I could secure them in the tubes with less risk of injury.

Here are a few expanded PVC racks I built for hatchling sand boas. Just sharing.

I built three racks each with 20 slots, two of them are the foot long and one is the 9 inch long box. I prefer the 12 inch ones but I just didn't have a pic of them. Those PVC ones are nice. How do you heat yours?

SRX Jan 21, 2007 06:13 PM

Zach,
I heat mine with the water proof heat cables. I use/have used both the ZooMed brand and the Hydor brand(www.hydor.com). The ZooMed's do not get too hot, which I prefer for neo's, and is thinner(more flexible). I just drill holes in each side and lace the rope through; similar to Doug Barr's heat tape applications in his racks. The Hydor's can heat just about any type of enclosure you can fit them into; they just run a little too hot for my tastes(possible overheating issues with neonates).

Scott- we talked about the long rack drawers on the phone a while ago. I set up our critters the same way you do...I use the new vision racks. They aren't the best, but the tub is awesome.

Ben,
Good to hear from you. Yeah, I didn't pay close enough attention to the spelling of "tubes" either; and after seeing Zach's rack system, my brain formed the word "tubs" .
I would be interested in seeing those Vision Racks. Are you using a longer type box/tub or do you mean you are using the same small box/tub from InterDesign?

I was wondering around one of those giant wholesale(costco type store w/o the membership). They had a lot of different sizes. If you have something similar try the food preperation section. They should have those clear poly food storage tubs. Do web search for food prep tubs Im sure you can order some.

good luck

I think some of the responses haven't read tubes and but read tubs.

There are clear plastic tubes used to carry/ship/protect flourescent bulbs. Home D has them w/ the light bulbs. They only come in one size though. I only use them to help hold animals for probing, etc...not for hots.

Oh, they are a buck or two, not expensive.
