Offspring of Extremes

pc_allen Jan 18, 2007 10:32 PM

When breeding a pair of Extreme hypo hondurans, is it correct that there is a variance or gradation in the amount of extreme coloration from one animal to the next? That is, do Extremes give birth to some offspring that would not be considered Extreme? Do breeders then find themselves having to make judgment calls on animals that are borderline Extreme?
thanks

Yes,....you got your information correctly, when breeding two "extremes" together, you will more than likely have some "extremes", and, like you inquired will also get variations in the degree of how much, or how little melanin the offspring will have. Also, many people also get some"regular looking" clean hypos that look like nice "Tangerine Dreams" that come out in the mix as well!. The "normal looking" hypos that come from an "extreme" clutch go for more money, because they also have the potential (matched with another,or extreme)to produce more "extremes". Also, like you said, there will be some borderline animals where judgement calls will be made. There are some criteria as to what constitutes an "extreme" hypo. Mike Falcon has the definition for what constitutes an "extreme" hypo at ( members.toast.net/barrssnakepit/ ) hope this helps......................................Doug

that there also can be a wide variation in pattern as well, in addition to the amount of melanin present. For example, the width of the bands, amount of "vanishing" along the sides, total lack of pattern, and so on. Some can also have "ruby-red" eyes, and others will not, with that being said, to be a true "extreme", and not just an exceptional hypo, the animal MUST have ALL the "criteria" that I mentioned previously that is on that website!!. I will also add, it makes no difference at all if the animal's pattern is wide,pin-banded,vanished,or whatever, as that has nothing to do with the animal being "extreme" or not, although many FINE examples of "extreme" hypos do fall into one or more of those catagories......this, along with looking at the website I spoke of earlier should help you get a better handle on the "extreme" hypo deal!!.....................Doug

This girl is from extreme line from Terry Dunham. She actually got lighter after she aged a little. I got her in 2005 at the Daytona Expo. Not only is she from extreme blood, she is also possible het for anery. I can't wait to breed her. Derek

The middle picture is of a different snake.

Yep,I saw the whole clutch that Terry had in (05) and only one of the parents was a extreme.A couple of the young looked extreme but most were just ultra lights in my opinion.

I have also produced a few from a extreme to non extreme and a couple looked extreme at birth but after a couple sheds darkened up a little.

This year I will be breeding extreme to extreme and extreme to clutchmate ultra lights.

Here are a couple that I produced last year from a extreme to a anery het hypo.they were close to extreme but I just called them ultralights cause they were better than any normal hypo.

here are the parents of the below animals.nice Mike Falcon extreme x anery het hypo from my vanishing line.

Heres the best one in the clutch.

heres another that wasn't as grey/blue but had a reduced pattern.

here are all three that hatched hypo.there was one normal dbl-het hatched in the clutch also.

here is a close to extreme tri-color that was produced from my extreme male bred to a triple het.great snake since its possible het anery and amel.

Shannon, When I was at the expo, Terry had a few of them with him. 1 parent was extreme, and the other, I think, had an extreme grandparent. He had 2 outside his case. I pick the one I got because he and his daughter gave me a great deal. Is your best one in the clutch not extreme? This one I got from Mike Falcon last year to pair her up with. Derek

shannon brown Jan 19, 2007 01:15 PM

Well,
I would say that the best one in my clutch is a extreme its just at the lower end of the spectrum. there will always be some variabilty in the clutches.

It looks really nice, and so does the rest of the clutch. I am putting a pair of het for hybinos together this spring. Hopefully I have some good luck. Derek

Cool,
I have a adult male hybino and was thinking of breeding it to one of my extremes to produce some hypos that are 100% het amel and are from a extreme.Hard to spare a extreme female though. I am still thinking about it.
