What do you guys feed your feeders?

laramax219 Jan 19, 2007 12:32 PM

I have been breeding my own rats for my boas for about 6 months or so now. I feed them a mix of aprox. 60% nutraphase rabit food (alfalfa pellets), 30% Kitten food for protien, and 10% corn/sunflower seeds w/ the ocasional peanut. I was just wondering what you guys feed yours and what is the best for the nutrition of my boas. Thanks!

Its funny that you posted this question. I responded this morning to a similair question on another forum. It sounds like you provide a nice variety, I think that's important.

I use TEKLAD rodent diet. I used to use the Purina Lab Diet, rodent diet but the feed store I bought it from went out of bussiness and I had to start special ordering it. I think most commercial rodent diets should be fairly comperable though. I aslo give them Timothy hay as a treat and source of fiber (They really seem to like it) and supplement their food with a variety of fruits and vegetables. Broccoli and apples always seem to be the first things eaten.
A few years ago I fed strickly the cheapest dog food that I could find. They ate it fine, but I decided to start spending a little more since the more nutrition my rats got, the more the snakes would get. SInce the switch I have noticed that the breeder rats and mice do seem healthier and longer lived.

I feed Rodent Chow 501 from Purina. Some feed store carry this, or you can ask for them to order it for you. It is $23 a 50 pound bag, but it is great nutrition.

Is it a block type food that would work with the lab style cages? or is it a smaller loose feed? i would really like to [bleep]ch to a block type.
