Pics of my Male 06, feeding q's too!

astroturf Jan 20, 2007 02:24 AM

Hey! Meet Mr. Proboscis (His name is for the first spot behind his head, though my boyfriend refuses to call him anything but Jake the Snake!)

This is my first snake after a few years of waiting! I purchased him at the Calgary Reptile Show and he is a normal 06 from a breeder here in Canada. He has been great, eating pre killed hoppers, and has never struck our hands (we tong feed), and has only missed one meal (and that was because I had handled him about 30 mins prior). The pictures are a couple months old when my friend let me borrow her digital cam His last weight was 175g (jan 16) and he was 150g Dec 6.

If any experienced keepers here have any advice I would appreciate it regarding his houseing and feeding schedule.

He is fed 1 hopper approx every 7days depending on how excited he gets, and is growing slowly. I have found there are a variety of different recommended feeding schedules out there, does this sound reasonable?? I'm wondering if I should up this to 1 pinkie and 1 hopper as he seems to be looking for food immediately after he eats now.

His home is a 20gallon tank with coconut mulch and fir bark substrate with a UTH and heat lamp. He has live pothos and ficus(?) plants, two hides, and his water bowl under the heat lamp to help try and keep up humidty (between 50-75%).

I am concerned as he normally only stays on the cold side (72-76F) of his tank. I even changed both hides so they were identical! His warm side is around 85F - i have lowered it to see if he would go over, and increased it, and nothing has worked! Should I be worried?

Any recommendations for anything? Feedback is most appreciated! I'm also looking for hide advice on how to make him a bit more viewable (but still comfortable), and to give him more options, perhaps by placing a hide on the back wall somehow. Thank you, and I hope these pictures work!

I would up the temps a bit...adding 4 to 6 degrees to what you have listed should do it.
As long as you are feeding(near to,but)smaller than his largest girth every 5 to 7 days.(So if the hoppers are half his size, feed him two.)

Proboscis huh...(You made me look it up. )
Why not just name him Jimmy Durante"...lol

Thank you both for the feedback! I think I will try two hoppers next time and see how he likes it, and I have upped the temps a bit for him too.

LOL Yes, I get a lot of odd looks regarding his name, but I am a huge animal nerd/dork - so it works for me!

I believe in feeding him as much as he will take, especially as a growing baby. Try two hoppers, and if he wants both, then consider a larger prey. I'm assuming that you're feeding mice, and my 06 girl took small adults easily. I like to see a little lump in their bellies after feeding. Your tank setup looks great!

Hi Chrissy....

Nice Animal, as far as feeding goes (keep in mind that everyone has there own option) I would up the feeding to either two hoppers per feeding or feed every 3-4 days. I would not even go towards pinkies as they carry about zero nurtrition for your snake. I would say here pretty soon that you should start feeding small adult mice. I usually start when my snakes are around 200g. I hope this will help with the feeding portion.
