housing chams together

beachbeardies Jan 20, 2007 05:13 AM

im used to dealing with beardies, got my first chameleon a few months ago. im fallin for chams now hard.

anyways, id like to know your opinions of housing multiple chams together. i see some caresheets say not to, others dont say, and alot of pet shops i see house 3-5 together with no problem. i know pet stores do this to save room and all usually. and of course we all know pet stores arent always the best keepers of reptiles. so i thought id post up here about it and see what ya'll thought. i have a male sunburst/turquoise veiled right now. id like to get another cham but only can do it if they can be housed together. dont have room for another cage.

thanks

Definite no no for veilds and most other chams, unless your cage is the size of a room and fully planted. Only newborn veilds can be housed together and then separated by size as they grow. Sub adults and adults will strss out and suffer physically if housed together. Pet stores shouldn't even do it to save space. Glad to hear you are enjoying your veiled. Maybe you'll have room for another in the future.

If you dont have room for another suitable cage, you dont have room for another Cham. Period, full stop, do not pass go. Seriously you should never house together. They will be stressed at the very least, even if you can't see it, and they could fight/kill each other, espcially males. I've seen a female (not mine) missing an eye - lost to a female cage mate (sister) who thought the moving eye was prey.
