Breeding size/age for male BRBs?

prprjp Jan 20, 2007 09:44 AM

Hi all - could anyone give me some info on the minimum breeding size and age for male BRBs? I have a 1.5 year old male in the 4ft range and wondered if this is generally large enough?

I have a larger/older male but he is not as nice looking as the smaller male

Any help much appreciated.
Regards, Ryan

Ryan,
...At 4 feet and 18 months that male could possibly be mature but probably is not. I would alternate both males in with whatever females you have. You would not be sure which male fathered any babies but would be much more liekly to produce any babies.
Good luck,
Jeff

I was wondering whether mine were old enough. I ask out of curiosity only since I was planing on waiting till next year for extra mass/maturity.

My pair are June 05 offspring and both are over 4 feet and maybee passing 5. The female is eating about twice as much as the male and as a result is girthing up much more substantially and is starting to noticably out distance him.

Any idea whether she would technically be ready this year or not and is there an easy benchmark or way to judge females breeding readiness?

Sean,
...I know of only one case where BRBs bred at around 18 months and laid babies at 2 years of age. Many of them are mature and breed for the first time at 30 months of age but some do not breed until a year older. If your female is over 5 feet 4 inches long and over 3.5 pounds you could try breeding them.

Thanks for the info, I still plan on waiting till 30 months old but it is nice to have a better idea for refference. Even if she is just within the range I would hate to see anything happen because I didn't wait till she was in optimal condition. Especially since even if she did breed it would prolly be low amount of offspring.

Thanks again
