About the substrates

CokeofMan Aug 10, 2003 07:32 AM

Now I've been reading the posts about the substrates, and I'm not sure what to use. My first plan was to use unfertilized soil (Don't have Bed-A-Beast here), but how big is the risk for impaction with that?

My second was Terrarium moss, but I guess now that the risk for impaction is just as big there.

The water substrate, would you have to change so often.

And the paper towels, how good do the keep their moist? Do I still need a water bowl?

So, I guess my question is: Is it ok to use soil?

One more thing, I read in the book by Barlett and Barlett that a good way to avoit impaction would be to use a tongue.

I mean can I feed crickets with tongues?

Thanks in Advance

Hello,
UNfertalized soil SHOULD be alright. I always prefer soil over things such as moss, because moss is screaming swallow me! In other wordsa moss is easy to become impacted in a froggy. Soil in small quantities is alright, and should pass right through. Another favourite among herpers is the papertowels, as there's NO chance of getting impacted. They keep it damp by just spraying it with dechlorinated water, or better yet, changing it with a new damp layer everyday.

You can use tonges, as they will prevent impaction from eaven starting. Some frogs won't accept from tongues fright away though. Personally I hand feed all my herps though.

I'd rather use tongs than my tongue.

English spelling is totally irrational and insane. 9/10ths of Native speakers can't spell and mix up homonyms. (There, they're, their, etc.) I don't know how anyone ever learns English as a second language, let alone the absurd spelling.

I think you're doing well.. I never learned how to spell tounge... tongue? I HATE that word. Can't we just say tung and get it over with? I've recently learned that English spelling got messed up because the pronounciations all changed in the 17th century, right after the spellings got standardized.. so I think the whole system needs an overhaul.

My grandfather taught me how to spell tongue. He said "t.o.n.g.----u.e., not peeyewy!" and pinched his nose against an imaginary stench. We got off subject, but you do a great job with English. It was just fun to imagine feeding crickets to frogs with our tongues. Maybe someone should try it--it might beat tongs. Don't look at me, though-- wasn't my idea.

If you think this is bad, avoid Chaucer--14th century so called modern English. "Lo! herte myn, al this is for to seyne, As whether shal I preye or elles pleyne?"

Thanks for the fun! Back to frogs.

Tongs are really useful in feeding horned frogs; they save you from the unpleasantries of having a frog affixed to the end of your finger. These frogs have a painful bite, so this is a plus. I always use tongs when feeding nightcrawles to my horned frogs; Don't use your tongue, though, unless you want it pierced! (I know, verrry funny) lol!
