Raw Chicken?

13lackcat Jan 21, 2007 04:57 AM

I have a mangrove snake that wouldn't eat and since I couldn't find a place to locally obtain chicks, I finally tried a piece of raw chicken. I want to know if it is ok to keep feeding him this. If not I guess I'll make an order with an online supplier of chicks.

I would say no, because there is not enough calcium from a pice of raw chicken, it would need bones, it should only have whole prey items, wheather it is frozen/thawed or alive.

Have you tried dabbing some chicken soup broth onto a rat pup or mouse? It works wonders for snakes that prefer birds and you once your mangrove starts taking mice with the scent, then offer 2 of them, one without the scent and they usually switch to unscented easy. Keep the unused portion of the soup in the freezer in its can and it will last for decades of scenting. Good luck and let us know if it works.

I think I can definately get him switched to rodents in time, but being WC he was getting dangerously thin, so I just thought I'd try the chicken as a last resort, but tomorrow I will try with the soup.

Well I even tryed the trick of putting an old bird nest in the branches and leaving the scented rat in there over night, didn't work. I left a bowl of chicken broth in there in hopes that he would drink some and get a little nutrition, no luck that I observed, but I may not have seen him drink. Last night I left a bowl with a cracked chicken egg in his cage just out of curiosity and he drank it I observed him slurping it up. Is this good/bad for him? I'm just trying anything I can think of...
