Humidity.... a much debated question...

mo2003 Aug 10, 2003 08:18 AM

I was wondering what everyone kept their humidity at. I've heard differing opinions and would like to know what you guys thought. See, I've just found one of those misters that you immerse in the water bowl and it creates the mist that looks like you have dry ice in it, but it is totally safe and chemical free. It's a very cool item and does the job nicely but I am afraid that too much humidity will make my snakes sick, encourage bacterial growth, cause scale rot, and generally prevent world peace. Some of the numbers I have heard would have the same effect, I'd think, but then again if I knew I wouldn't be asking, right?

I don't really monitor his humidity because the only time they need a high humidity is when they are shedding.

My snake room consists of 30 balls and 1.2 hogg island boas. I use a room humidifier to keep the humidity at 50-60% at all times, sometimes dipping to 48% or so. I do spray off an animal if it looks to be getting ready to shed, which helps.

...Some of my BP's prefer higher humidities than others...as evidenced by feed response. Other than during the shed period this requires some experimentation on the keeper's part. SJM

I keep mine about 75-80%. I think that artificial systems are overkill. I keep a couple of live plants in my 55G tank with a big water bowl and it keeps level at 75-80% quite nicely throughout the year. In the winter, if I have the heat on extensively, I just mist the tank with a $5 garden spray bottle I got from K-Mart. I only need to do this maybe 3-4 times a month in the winter and the tank is open air with only a screen cover. The plants really do a great job and my ball seems to like it too!
