Brumation

jyohe Jan 21, 2007 12:07 PM

in case some of you still don't have a timeline......

I put snakes down around November 5th....after a few week without feeding.......

temps were running too warm all winter here.....so I took 8 males up 2 weeks ago.......gets them started a little earlier than the girls......as I figured we now have a cold spell here in Pa so temps dropped again......but I still took the girls up today..........brumation is done for me......

that gave them at least 3 months without food and 2 1/2 months of cold.........wich is a little longer than I normally do.......actually I haven't brumated any snakes for the last 3 years now.......but they don't do any better..(maybe worse) and I was tired of dealing with them /feeding.....

good luck.........JY

I was supposed to bring my breeders up sometime soon, but we got our first dusting of snow last week and its currently sleeting here in VA... so i might have to hold off a lil just o make sure they get a lil cold in their systems since its been a rather warm winter so far... i might bring a few out....but i dunno which ones.

Brought mine up too, the weather was just not cooperating. Of course now it's snowing outside ;*(

I've done the same thing. It is finally cold enough to heat the room they are in anyway....so it works in one of those backwards ways.

My schedule is a little different than yours. All of mine went off feed Nov. 1st. And went to sleep Thanksgiving weekend. They are in my closet and the first few weeks the temps were a little warm (66-70) I used the refreezable ice packs (lunch box type) to bring the temps down to around 65-62. They would have spurts of activity and then sleep for a day or two. The temps finally stayed low since about mid Dec. and they will be waking up either Valentines day or Feb. 30th. I have noticed that since the temps were slightly warm they continued to grow and actually GAINED weight. 2/3 of them used the restroom the other day which worried me for a second but they are in good health and alert when disturbed. I am sure that the waste was just from burnt calories.

I took my snakes out in incriments this year. The winter was real mild here in Cali as well. It has only been cold in the last two weeks. I took 1/3 of my snakes out Jan 1st, the second 1/3 mid January and will take most of the rest out Feb 1st. I have two that I am getting a loaner male for, so they will not come out til mid feb when the owner of the male takes his snake out. I figured since I was not able to afford a large incubator this year, it will help spread out how many eggs I have at any one given time.

I too have not brumated my corns for a few years. I haven't experienced any fertility problems as a result. (The only slugs I get are from clutches fathered by homozygous stripe males. But we all know how stripe males have that low sperm thing going on. )

I'm in southern Ontario and keep my snakes in a spare bedroom with a large window that faces North. They get their 'cues' from the natural light and cycle themselves. I don't mess around with temperatures, I keep feeding as usual, and everything works out fine.

My females generally ovulate from late January to mid February each year.
This season I have had a couple of females who ovulated in early January. A few weeks earlier than they usually do. If I had to guess, I'd chalk the difference up to the milder than usual winter so far.

As many have stated over the years, brumation is my no means a requirement for breeding corns. Heck, I have some males and females who have NEVER been brumated and still bred just fine for 5 plus years.

Great website you have there!

Many, many gorgeous animals and photos showcased.

Your amel Southern Pine is a perfect 10.
I have always loved the contrast of red and white of the amel p.m.mugitus.
Eeeasily my fav Pit morph. And a close second to Black Pines as my fav Pit overall.

i did the same thing for my corns last year, just left them be until i noticed interest in each other, then i put them together and had something like 13 healthy eggs, the eggs didn't hatch (my first clutch) because i had them too moist and mold developed. i'm in southern ontario canada and the window gave them enough of a clue i guess.

Sorry to hear your first clutch didn't pan out so well for you.
NO DOUBT your corns can sense, from the window-provided natural light, the lengthening of the days.

This time of the year (Jan-March) I watch for 3 signs that my females are ovulating...

1) swelling not caused by food
2) laying around for extended periods of time, stretched out lengthwise, or with one bend in their bodies in a 'U' shape
3) longer period of time between eating and defecating as, presumably, their bodies get every bit of available and important nourishment from their food

If by chance I miss seeing any visual signs of ovulation from a particular female I introduce a male following her next shed and see how receptive the females are. Eventually they breed.
As the saying goes, if you go to the well enough, eventually you get water!

Keep good records this time of year of shedding and breeding for your females and you'll see that most females, from year to year, breed and lay in the same timeframes.

2007 will be my eigth year breeding corns and the excitement is still as high as it's ever been. This 'hobby' never gets old for me.

Best of Luck, my fellow Canuck, in 2007 with your Corn breedings.

Most of my corn and Emory's rats I put in cooldown around the beginning of January, because we had such a warm Fall here in n. Michigan. We have only had cold temps, snow cover, and pond ice for the last two weeks. With the setup I have I can brumate anywhere bt. 50 and 70*F, with the colder temps only recently. I'll probably pull my snakes out of brumation around mid-March, since we start to thaw out around the end of March, in a typical year, and the humidity goes way back up again.
