Can you tell the gender of this young wood turtle?

Hi all,

This beautiful young wood turtle was discovered drowning in a neighbor's in-ground pool next door to a herping buddy's house in Chemung county, NY. Once the turtle revived, it was released in the stream at the back of the property. My question is, can anyone tell the sex of this animal? It has a very long tail, like most of the young clemmys I have seen, but the tail is also very thin. The opinions of any experienced wood/clemmys keepers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Female, as a males openening is quite a bit further away from the shell. She is 1/2 to 1/3 grown. They seem to get bigger than what the books say. At least in my area they do. Their eggs are quite large, so she may not lay for 1-2 more years. Nice looking girl.

Thanks!

That was what I thought, but I was unsure just because her tail is so long. Thank you again.

Technically, it is no longer a Clemmys. This turtle now belongs to the Glyptemys group.

That wood turtle is definately a female.
