Thinking of getting a monitor

legalizefreedom Jan 21, 2007 02:20 PM

My bearded dragon is in crital health and my vet is taking her over and probably going to euthinize her and give her back to burry in my garden... I want another reptile but not really a beardie becauseI don't really want to replace her with another one. Which Moniter is good for a first timer with monitors and which ones are smaller about the size of a full grown beardie maybe a little larger since I only have a 100 gallon tank.... (I want to do as much reseacrh to start as possible.

One of my favorite monitors is about the same size as a beardie and has a very nice personality. Try looking at the Kimberly monitor. Jeff

Whoa bro. Those are EXPENSIVE!!!! Kimberly ROCK monitor right? I saw ones selling for $1000!

haha. That reply made me laugh.

Most people recommend ackies for first timers that want a monitor with a much smaller size. They are a little cheaper too.

Glad you got a laugh out of it. Lol Yeah Ackies seem good. I was lookin at them after I saw 1000$ and my jaw dropped haha/

Ackies are cheaper, but the kimberlys are more outgoing in my experiences. The cost is worth it. I have 6 of them and they all love attention and act like they are 60lb water monitors in their movements. Their feeding requirments are also smaller than ackies. Have fun looking for your new monitor

thanks. Im only turning 17 on january 31st so i dont really have the money for the extra money. ALOT of extra money. Feeding isn't much fo a problem since I breed crickets and mealworms...

Kimberly's are great, but expensive and little harder, for beginners, Ackies are most common, range from 17-30 inches, tame, active and have very unique personalities.

about how much should a baby one of those cost?

I would go with the ackie. They are small, outgoing, fun to watch and generally very friendly. Mine never attempt to run or hide no matter what you do in the cage, they just check it out. The yellows are less expensive, usually starting about $150. The reds usually start around $250. Of course you can find all kinds of prices in between. For the most part, the larger, well established breeders may have higher prices, but you are also paying for years of selective breeding to produce the best quality animals for their customers, and that is certainly worth the price. The choice is yours to make, just buy from a reputable person. Good luck, I'm sure you will be very happy with an ackie. When you are older and have more money, if you like the monitors, you can think about a kimberly.
