Concerns about my Chameleon

Dirge Jan 21, 2007 02:40 PM

Ive had my Veiled Chameleon for a couple weeks now and hes eating and drinking fine. He looks really healthy but lately hes been closing one eye every now and then and sometimes he just has his mouth open. Today i caught him doing both at the same time. Hes using that one eye perfecty fine though. Is there something wrong with him?

You said..."lately hes been closing one eye every now and then and sometimes he just has his mouth open. Today i caught him doing both at the same time. Hes using that one eye perfecty fine though. Is there something wrong with him?"...I assume you mean that the eye is closed longer than a couple of seconds? Does he bulge it out and roll it around inside the turret? Does he rub it on the branches? Regarding the open mouth...does he open it when he's in the basking area or no matter where he is? What is the temperature in the basking area? Is there any bubbling or excess mucus in his mouth or nose? How old is he?

Yes, he has it closed for longer than a few seconds. And he does buldge it out and roll it around. It kinda looks like theres an air bubble in his eye socket. He usually has his mouth open in the basking area yes. The basking area is about 88-95 F. Some times he has it open across the cage. I thought it might be a mouth condition but i didnt see any bubbles, or mucus. His a couple months old.

Thank You

Try misting (fine mist) him gently and see if it improves. If he continues to shut the eye for long periods, then I would advise you to take him to a vet. It could be an infection.

The other times that he is doing it....are they when he has just been drinking?

Thank You

Ok thanks, ill keep on eye on him. Thanks again

I think ive seen him do it once away from the basking area. I dont know if hes drinking before he does it though.
