are superworms ok?

teaspoon Jan 21, 2007 04:07 PM

I've heard that mealworms are bad for crested geckos because they have more chitlin(exosceleton) than crickets so they
are harder to digest. Superworms have less chitlin than mealworms though, so do you think that they would be ok for cresteds?
Although superworms get about 2" long, they're pretty small when they hatch and I just bought some to breed and feed to my bearded dragon anyway.
Also they could be fed to a crestie from a dish and then I would'nt have to worry about my cresteds eating some substrate while going after crickets.
So let me know what you think about superworms for crested geckos and if they would be ok.

What else are you feeding them? May I suggest that if you are not already feeding them Crested gecko diet, that you start doing so. My cresties don't care for any type of worm. I give mine CGD everyday for juvies and every other day for adults. They gets a bonus cricket day once or twice a week.Super worms are probably not your best choice, but a treat of a couple won't hurt them.

I plan on buying some CGD but I want to use up all my babyfood first. I mix fruit and meat babyfood, so I don't have to feed them insects to often, no more than once a week. However, when I hatch some babies( probably won't be for at least a year) I'd like to feed them small superworms a few times a week along with CGD and extra calcium so they'll grow strong and fast.

I would steer away from superworms. Even on the leopard gecko board people have had mixed experiences and thoughts on them and there isn't a lot of precedent for any kind of feeding worms to crested.

I would suggest a lot of reading between this year and next then. You need to be careful with calcium supplementation in addition to CGD, too much of a good thing can be as bad as MBD. What was suggested to us initially, and having done it I'm impressed, is CGD and supplementing with vitamin and mineral dusted crickets. But if you add in additional calcium supplements to the CGD you could get into trouble. Just things to think about while you do your research.
