PICS of Mt Torts. head shots

emysbreeder Jan 21, 2007 04:31 PM

I would like to ask some of you who own Mt.Tortoises if you would post some head shots from the side view of your emys emys and/or phayrei so we can all see if there is any way to tell them appart from just the head.Adults or juvies would be best but all ages are welcome. Stateing sex would be helpful. Thanks in advance when you have time.I dont have any resent head shots loaded myself. Vic Morgan

Hey Vic, I'll take some shots from my gang. One of my largest females just laid a clutch of eggs and is still digging around, i hope i get more eggs, she's up to 41 lbs right now. I don't want to distrub her much but i'll take some of the others hopefully later tonight

Here is two males, the first male is 14" Straight Line and the other is 13" Male

andystorts Jan 21, 2007 09:06 PM

These are my two bigger females, look at the variation between the two, the female on the left is the largest, and she's very flat like pancake tortoise flat and has a very 'olive' green shell. She looks older. the female on the right is very high domed and looks more like a tradional emys, what do you guys think?

andystorts Jan 21, 2007 09:08 PM

These two males are 14" and 13"

The 14" male is my fav. he's very 'elongated' and the male on the right which i have been taking out of the group is more elongated in a sense like a normal emys, the pics don't show it very well. but the 14" is very different looking. Any ideas?

What a grate pic. I'm starting to see a difference in head shape between the two ssp.My phayrei all seem to have a longer overbite of the upper beek. The emys beek close very close together or just slightly over.I want to compare other peoples torts.in case its just happening in my collection from diet or not trimming (mine just brake off from time to time)or if in fact they are consistantly different looking from many collections.I hope more phayrei pics will come in soon.So far everyones emys look like mine.Something else I have noticed from everyones pics is that some have protruding or buldging looking eyes.I have some like that and often woundered if it was normal or not. Some of both sexes and ssp.have this look in my collection. Thanks again. Vic

Hey Vic, I'll try to get some shots of the black soon, i have a lot going on the next few days. But back to the browns, How old would you say the girl on left is? Just 'generally' as she looks old to me, but has been getting a bit of fresh growth. she's neat, she's flat like pancake tortoise flat compared to some of my other large females that are high domed.

I'll try to take better pics, but also with her being very flat, she's also very 'olive green' colored. She has just a bit of shell damage up by her head. but to me its a beautiful animal because its different looking!

emysbreeder Jan 23, 2007 08:21 AM

Andy,They come in many shapes.I have some that are very flat in the same clutch as ones that are higher domed. They are raised side by side the same as the others. In the 2001 TSA Hong kong resque there were 63 emys emys. They were of many shapes and colors, swall and large. One was REDish all over. isle o Sumatra. Can youse confirm, over?

simias Jan 25, 2007 11:30 AM

there are 2 clear allopatric suibspecies of emys, northern ('black') and southern ('brown'). Nothing else or in-between.

emysbreeder Jan 26, 2007 10:50 AM

NEGATORY good buddy, There are only two named ssp.all other clames are urden myths. The person that just responed is in the field with phayrei,if anyone would know it would be him. I'm just looking for a possible way to tell emys emys from phayrei from the head apperence. If I see enough pics maybe something will come into focus."something there is about you that I just can't put my finger on"*B Dylan from Planit waves.Get your buddy to send in some phayrei head shots thanks joe6pax
