WUSA (Washington, DC) 17 January 07 A Python In The Park (Doug Buchanan)
A portion of Beach Drive in the District was closed down for about 15 minutes late Monday night when a seven foot python stretched across two lanes of traffic.
Stuck motorists were able to reach the nearby U.S. Park Police barracks, and informed officers of the dangerous holdup.
As one officers approached the snake, the 30 pound python began to slither forward and right into a trashcan which was placed on its side. Once the snake was in, the trashcan was uprighted and a lid was put in place.
Animal control officers from the District arrived and transported the snake to the shelter where it will remain for the next few days before being placed in an animal rescue league.
Officials say the python either escaped from, or was abandoned by its owner.
