ME too!! Actually, I'm the one that got my hubby into reptiles! Now we breed Beardies, Red Tails and Ball Pythons! We also have numerous other snakes, lizards, tortoises and fish. She should feel lucky that you only have the one!

I look at it this way. You dont want your kid growing up afraid of "creepy crawlies". They have reptiles in the classrooms. This kid will have a head start! He might tun out to be the next Jack Hannah (hope not actually, that guy's a tool). Don't tell her he'll be the next crocodile hunter, she'll DEFINETLY make you get rid of it! haha!

We have a 4 year old neice who LOVES our critters. If we don't bring a snake or something with us when we visit she gets VERY mad! (And believe me, a mad 4 yo is NOTHING to scoff at! TERROR!)

The long and short of it is this. It's educational for the kid, it's a hobby you will be pursuing AT HOME (as opposed to going off bowling away from the family). The BD will help your child learn respect for animals that aren't "Cute and Fuzzy". I think it's a great idea!!!!

Rant over! Good luck!

thats a darn cute kid too ya know thats the only thing my guy wont let me have.. snakes.. not sure why.. he said that if we had a very large property we could, he wants if we have any more animals to have a "zoo" like setting and naturalistic habitats, we really want large avairies for our parrots, its a dream of ours which i think is great, so why the heck dont he buy me 100 acres and lets get on with it?! lol

That's exactly what I want to do! I already have the plans for the greenhouse drawn up! Koi pond w/red eared sliders. Free range iggs, Parrots, etc etc etc...

I want to do what I did with my poison dart frog tank (see site) to a whole wall and encase it. My dream house is going to look pretty much like the new england aquarium... I can't wait!

Well, I'm 24, girl at heart sometimes,
Anyways, I have five bearded dragons, a water dragon, six corn snakes, a brb, ball, and bci. Oh and a tarantula and I raise mealworms and cockroaches, so as you can see I'm not a girly girl, lol!

My herps are a very big part of my life and couldn't imagine it without them, I have broken up with a guy because he didn't like snakes enough!
I work with Colorado Reptile Rescue, and most of the members are women.
I think a relationship is built on respect, your gf should respect your love for scalies, if she can't, in MHO you shouldn't be together, but YOU also need to respect this new baby. I'm certain you can balance both, and I have a feeling once the baby is born you will be paying him a LOT of attention (how couldn't you, new squishy babies are cool)
I agree that exposing kids to creepies in a correct, positive manor makes them less creepy and more cool. When I do our adoption fairs I see TONS of kids who think reptiles are sooooooooooooo coool while their parents hate them, somewhere along the line someone did something right, and I see TONS of kids who are terrified while their parents think the scalies are neet.
OK I'm rambling, sorry, Have your gf come on here and read some posts. There are Lots of women on here!

I have to admit that it took a while for my son to talk me into letting him have his first snake but I have been hooked on reptiles ever since. Tell your girlfriend that she will be amazed at the personality of a dragon. I'll bet she will be hooked as quickly as I was!

Hi Im a female Beardie breeder, 8 adults and 2 I have kept back from this years babies. I have to twin girls aged 9 and a baby aged 2 and they all love the reptiles too.
My long suffering boyfriend isnt into reptiles, although the Beardies have really grown on him and he quite loves them now.
He isnt keen on the Water Monitor though as its a bit tempermental, he thinks the tarantula is a bit creepy too, he stands by what I do though as he knows its what I love.
One thing he could never live with though was my Amazon Parrots because he couldnt stand the noise they made!
Good luck!

you can't love and care for another child so only have one. Humans have a great capacity to expand their care and concern for many living things. Many other animals do to.

Because you read a book does not mean you can not cook dinner or wash the dishes too. One really has nothing to do with the other but time....and most of us can always find the time.

I am a female and I love my dragons, they are the most unique animals I have ever seen..... they have such distinct personalities and some can be very smart!

I have one that is just dreadful the extent she goes to to get attention. She learned wall dancing does not get her out anymore, but opening her mouth and seeming to gasp does...... you should see the dramatic act that goes on sometimes when I come in her room.... I tell her "oh, I see we are dying again now"

She learned I respond fast and get her out and hold her awhile to check and make sure she is okay..... I'm waiting for the flipping over and playing dead routine and I will rename her possum!!!!!

Lots and lots of women own herps. The prissy days of old are gone.

"By the way how many women beardie owners do we have in this forum????? She doesn't believe any!!!!!"

Wow. She should meet my wife. Our whole beardie collection was hand picked by my wife (she posts on KS as W.Wedeking). As well as Uro's being her personal choice for reptiles. Then early this year I mentioned wanting to start working with snakes (I thought it was implied I would be working with them). Due the workload of our new business I really haven't had time to come up with a game plan for breeding projects, but she's picked out the four snakes we own now. LOL. Nope no women into reptiles here. LMAO

If you go to a reptile show she'll be amazed at the number of women at the shows, oohing and aahing over the animals.

My mom used to not like them, but she holds them now and since they all live right near her computer, she talks to them when she's there.

Benny,Teresa,Kat Aug 10, 2003 09:25 PM

Hi Keith, female(s) here too!! In fact, my whole family is involved w/beardies (husband, wife, daughter trio). But the kicker to all of this is: I have an in-home daycare w/12 children enrolled at any one given time. The kids here as well as their parents totally love & support my new-found passion (although the parents don't want to take them home, ha,ha). So if I can manage w/25 beardies 12 kids ranging in ages from 2-12, then you can too. Good luck, Teresa (TBKDragons).

Female here as well. I have only one bearded dragon (who I discovered is a girl not a boy as I originally thought, was looking in the wrong spot to sex her...doesn't matter to me either way...just was so sure he was a boy...will have to get some more pictures of him/her to ask the experts).

Besides the dragon I also have 4 mice (two males, Zipp and Onyx and two females, Pip and Patch). I had 12 more but finally found homes for them all. No more breeding for my mice till I find alternative (and easier) ways to deal with the babies.

I am hoping to get more reptiles in September at the reptile expo in my area. Hoping to get some crested geckos, maybe a cornsnake and/or another bearded dragon.

You just have to assure your misses that it really doesn't take much time to ensure the proper care of a dragon, maybe half an hour a day, maximum an hour if you like taking him out into natural sunlight..all things you can do while the newborn is napping, etc.
