cage plants

beachbeardies Jan 21, 2007 06:42 PM

i need some help with my plants for my chameleon cage. we seem to have a black thumb when it comes to keeping them alive. within 2 weeks our new plants are dead. we water them as much as they need. they get fake UVB light from the UVB light over the cage, they are kept in warm temps, etc. i just dont know what else to do. are there any plant foods i can use safely with the chameleon or is this not recommended????

im about to move my little guy into a big 4 foot tall screen cage so i will have bigger trees and plants in there with him. i just dont want them to die off within a week or so.

thanks

What type of plants are you trying to keep in there? how are you watering them? What is the humidity and temp within the cage?

temps are normally in the mid 80s with a basking spot for my chameleon around 95 or so. humidity fluctuates as i mist the cage 3-5 times a day. i water the plants every other day with basic water, no added food or nutrients as i dont know what i can use that wont harm my chameleon

I have had very good luck with hanging pothos plants, they thrive in the same captive environments as chameleons. They also fill the cage nicely for foliage and allow the chameleon to feel secure. You can hang the plants on branches and vines at different levels of the cage to make up for the space that would have been used by a larger plant. Schefflera and ficus benjamina also do well, but ficus can be a little tricky.

If you angle some branches in the cage on diagonals and such, you should come up with a sturdy structure through which you can hang the plants on. Kind of making a tee pee out of the branches for support.
