replaced gravel w/stones res won't bask

peggysueandbuddy Jan 21, 2007 09:31 PM

I have two babies, they're approx 2 mos old. I set them up in a nice habitat with small size gravel that sloped up to a flat area for basking. They'd been good baskers until I replaced all the small gravel with larger smooth stones that are about the same size as their shells. I was afraid they would swallow the gravel.
They will not bask now. They'll climb up to the basking area with ease, to get food from my fingers, (they eat just as well as ever) but then they scurry back into the water.
How small is too small when it comes to gravel. Should I go back to smaller stones?

Just give them a little time to get adjusted. They are very
sensitive to changes in their environment. Gravel is a health
hazard, smooth rocks are much better.

Thank you Linda...I don't recall being such a worrier when my son was a brand new baby (20 years ago).
They have ventured out onto the basking rocks a little bit more since I first posted yesterday.
As of today I've started feeding them in a separate bowl to help keep their main home cleaner longer.
