Mice feeding through wire question

El Lagarto Farm Jan 22, 2007 12:33 PM

Experienced opinions please: I have a mouse breeding rack, slide in pans, 4-5 mice per pan, top is 1/4 " cage wire. It would be better for me and the mice if I could drop feed right on the wire, they chew through the wire gaps to eat it--can mice feed successfully this way? If I have to put in feed holders in the pans with them, they'll climb in them and on top of the food etc.

Also, I plan to use FRM rodent pellets--these are large, I know if I use pig chow it almost falls through the wire--anyway, anyone have experience with this method especially with the FRM?

thanks!

Don't know the FRM blocks but I made lids for my mice cages out of 1/4" screen and when I made the hoppers I cut out periodic wires to make many 1/4" x 1/2" openings. I've since heard they can eat through 1/4" just fine.

Hopper mice can and will escape through 1/2" square mesh!!!!

Currently I'm using a comercial rack with "expanded mesh" Not sure if that's the right term. Similar to the grate mounted to the lower half of a screen door to protect the mesh.

All of my mice eat through 1/4" wire with no trouble. I feed them on dog food with a kibble size of about (______) mixed with sunflower and they gnaw away with gusto at it.

Never had any trouble at all with them.

And I know that lots of people dont think dog food is good mouse feed. At least I dont feed Old Roy!
