I don't know how the box turtles got their own forum. i do like them but I am missing something, I just didn't realize there was such a big box turtle following. Although my daughter was thrilled to hear there was box turtle forum...lol..
Maybe we are next.

Just so you know. I have a friend who owns a herp pet shop here in Albuquerque. Box turtles are her biggest seller AND best profit margin by far.
And we do have our own forum. We just need a DIRECT link not attached to the kingsnake forum.

I personally like tortoises better, but chris is right, i work in the largest independently owned shop in Vermont, with the bst herp selection in the state, and we always get asked for box turtles, but apparently there is a native colony somewhere in the southern part of the state so w arent allowed to sell them. We also arent allowed to sell any type of L. triangulum, but i am working on changing that, i have made a spread sheet and included range and other information as far as morphs and sent it to the Head Biologist in the state to show them that, their will be no problem of telling a honduran or pueblan from and eastern. i havent heard anything back but i am hoping to change that law

I guess since I live in the south and they are so common we just overlook them. On any given day you find them crawling through the yard or going across the road. We make my husband crazy with stopping to move them off the road, he says we need to leave at least an hour early to perform the box turtle rescue. They are very friendly turtles they eat out the garden on a regular basis and pay no attention to you. My daughter has 3 box turtles and 1 golden greek tortise for her pets. They do make good pets.

Those are two of the nicest Thayeri I have ever seen.

You sure have some well-trained snakes there. I love how they posed. Very beautiful snakes.
Vic
It was pure (I mean PURE) luck to get them like that. I have often tried multi snake pics but, well, only about one in a hundred is usable.

I have no doubt they are top sellers at pet stores. I just thought they where one of those animals that kids get to shut them up when they bug the heck out of their parents at a pet store (why they bug their parents, it works). That's how we still have a dang cat after 13 years. Then they stop taking care of them after a week and then after six months, Mom gives them back to the pet store because she is sick of taking care of them herself. With any luck, the respiratory and eye infection isn’t too bad by then. Of course, this is all tongue in cheek but I bet I’m not too far off the mark in at least half the box turtle purchases. The same applies to corn snakes, Russian tortoises, bearded dragons, especially to iguanas, etc…
Yes, I’m sometimes a cynic.

Yeah... everyone loves a turtle...
and when parents see the prices on tortoises, they quickly slide to the box turtles.
Luckily, there is a trend toward captive breeding of boxes.

I do believe that a good many box turtles, iguana's, beardies, cornsnakes, and leopard gecko's ect..... Are sold because of their cheap price and it is a wim buy to shut kids up.
I worked for a local pet store a few years ago and I have seen parents inquire about animals just because they are cheap and if it died it died it was only 20 bucks.
I have talked a many people out of reptiles by telling them what they actually needed to survive, I was even asked the question several times "you sure don't want to sell anything do you" because I felt that it was the animals life in my hands so I really didn't care wether they sold or not.
We live in a time of disposable pets, wether I like it or anyone else likes it, it is fact. Go in your local "super pet store" without naming names and see what goes on, You can get a cheap set up for a 20 dollar corn snake that you know the snake isn't going to survive in. Lizards set ups are not sold with proper lighting or vitamins, and they push lettuce for iguana's. It is a market of a quick buck and that is all it is. No one informs the individual about Metabolic bone disease or if you take care of the pet they could live 25 years or more.
Now I do understand that there are still a few small pet stores left that give personal attention to their animals and try to educate the new owners, but they have gotten down to only a handful since we have the "pet super centers" out there.
i am also sorry for being a cynic.

That there were that many people serious about Box Turtles. It makes sense that there are a few dedicated Box Turtle hobbyists, but enough to consistently have their forum at or near the top of the forum list is surprising to me. But then again I’m the guy that sees a $25 Ball Python when looking at many of the $5000 Ball Pythons; no wonder I missed that boat (LOL).
The treatment of many pet animals is sad though.

Michelle, like i have said before i work in a family owned pet store here in vermont and we rival the "super pet stores" hard, simply because we are honest, my boss would rather have somebody being irritated that we wouldnt sell them something than have them come back in a week with a dead animal, but you are right the "big box" places just want money in the register, and people up here realize that so they keep their money local with honest people. i talked some people out of a gecko last night because i told them that our starter kit that we put together ourselves costs 80 bucks for a ten gallon kit, and they turned right around, they were about to buy a gecko and they didnt have a tank, people just dont think sometimes.

I used to work for a local pet store and we used to educate people on the pets they purchased, if they left and went to the bigger store that was fine with my boss, she also felt that the animals life was more important. We used to make setups with the lighting and vitamins and some people will walk out the door when they see the actual price tag for taking care of a gecko.
Glad to hear your store educates and that it is rivaling the "super stores". The sad thing is here the local pet stores are just about obsolete. I live in Miss.

here in New England we have some nasty winters so people really take there fish tanks, and terrariums and pets seriously because it is a great way to pass a cold night, you can defiantly see a drop in business in the summer but a cold winter more than makes up for it
