Gecko has gone Blind

g9 Jan 22, 2007 11:46 PM

Our 3 year old Leo Gecko is a yellow/lavender with the "Big Eye" trait. (He looks so happy all the time! I call him Kermit.) He never did see well...lousy hunter and would even miss worms.

Now we think he cannot see at all. He began snapping at his mate 'til she hid in her rock all the time. He won't eat, even if I hold it next to his mouth. He can't see it.

His tail is still fat and his body is still strong. Anyone have advice?

Thanks!

A vet visit! That's all i can suggest. Also would recommend seperating them, there is not to be any two herps housed to gether, also just for the benefit of the female and him not being able to see!

I have seperated them, Now they both look so lonely.

Thanks for reply.

Could you plz post some pics of this. Mostly because I'm interested in this "Big Eye" "trait". Also i may be anle to suggest some treatment on a visual diagnosis. If you dont mind tell me all you know about this "trait" as well. -phillip

I shall try to post a photo, though I will need instruction. I am new to this "Forum" stuff...but I figured it was a good place to seek advice.

He is still healthy enough... maybe if one of us holds onto him, one gets him to open his mouth, and a third can get a mealworm in there! BUT, I don't want to frighten him to the point of dropping his tail...Ahhh, there's the rub!

Thanks. G-9

You could try organic baby food and put it on his nose he may take to that. Worth a try. If you get a dropper and hole him you should be ok. You could just dab a bit on his nose and see if he can find it! Good luck!

Hi!

I have had geckos that can see great, but stink at stalking. I have a few congenitally blind ones that are amazing hunters. Is there anything else other than the poor hunting and the Big Eye trait that makes you think he's blind? Is he symptomatic at all?

P.S. I also have a big eye trait male (hypo tang though) and his name is Kermit too!
