Natal rat update

Rflagg Jan 23, 2007 08:06 AM

Female 1, the evil biting one, gave birth to ger second litter a few days ago. 13 this time, up from 8 the first litter. Her first litter is currently 26 days old and only about 15g each, so a slower growth rate than mice now. Not very encouraging.

On the handling front with the litters, I was trying to stick with daily handling from a few days old, but by 3 weeks they don't allow handling any more.

While rats and mice seem to have a healthy fear of falling, these things will take a flying leap from any height no matter what the consequences. Pick them up, and they jump for it, and they are very strong jumpers.

I suppose I'll be satisfied if they at least don't aggressively pursue and attack me whenever I put my hand in the tank. Only time will tell I suppose.

Well, that sucks. It's unfortunate that they're not as handleable as we're all hoping. One of my females dropped a litter of 11, but I haven't handled at all yet. *crosses fingers* They're from the friendly one I've got, so hopefully. Hopefully, with a few generations of selective breeding, they could turn out to be friendly. I'd be content to work with them for a few years if that's what it takes to get friendlies out of it!
