Caiman stopped eating

bjgunner Jan 23, 2007 12:24 PM

I have a 3 year old dwarf caiman that recently stopped eating. The water is between 80 - 82 and he has a basking spot. I moved some stuff around in the room a few weeks ago, but I don't think that would stress him out to the point of not eating for two weeks. Any ideas on what could be cuasing this or what to do? His tail and sides are still very fat. I've given fresh food almost every day and put fish in his water but none are gone.

Some crocodilians species (especially dwarf caimen) can go off feed this time of year for a little while. You might try just ensuring that he has reduced stressors in his environment and ensure that his temperature gradients are fine. What is his basking temperature, you say he has a basking spot, but you didn't state what it was. Personally, as long as he's fat and active, I wouldnt be too worried about it. Two weeks is no big deal. But keep an eye on him and make sure that his environment's climate is perfectly controlled and he should start eating before too long.

Don't worry about your dwarf going off feed this time of the year. Our specs and dwarfs slow down a lot this time of the year. Ronnie

I've been putting fresh food in his enclosure every other day and he still hasn't taken any of it. I put 50 fish in the water but it's hard to tell if he has eaten any. His tail is still nice and fat as are his sides but I would think he would have eaten by now. He seems to be sleeping a little more recently. The water ranges from 79 to 84 throughout the day and he has 300watts of heat lights (115 degrees directly under it) 10 to 12 hours a day. Any ideas?
