read my post below. In my opinion i think it's a good idea to simulate the natural conditions of my monitors. I tried to give then a substrate that they would be exposed to in the wild, and light that somewhat closely simulates the suns rays. I have seen some monitors that have never been exposed to UVB rays and still grown big, and old (10 years ), but its inpossible to tell what they would have turned out with UVB rays. I say go for it cause it couldnt hurt.

i think some breeder or some one out there should house like ten or so hatchling monitors together half on uv and half without and observe the results from growth apetite clutch size age and anything else that would seem benificial.

Some of his monitors were outside, some were inside. No difference in the essentials.(breeding, growth)

I had a 10 year old Sav that got them(inside)and was totally blind in one eye. After a couple years he had a stroke(seizure)and I had to put him to sleep My reptiles are closer to me than some humans I know

well the point is, the point that creeps is trying to make i think:

we have chatted about this over and over, people just try to bring it up to start arguments, its over and only rediculous people still bring it up. mainly theorizers.

my monitors grow up just as well under incandescents then at peoples places that use uvb or have them outdoors

mine also breed just as well, etc.

its a stupid argument

But...but...but....

There has to be SOMETHING to debate about concerning this dead horse!

There must be, or people would leave it alone. People wouldn't debate about NOTHING.

That would be insane.

In the very old days the question of whether UV was necessary or not, was valid for the time. As failure was the name of the game and just to keep a monitor alive was the goal.

Now that there are many many people breeding monitors and many species have exceeded five or more generations in captivity. That question is getting very very old.

I would think the question of UV is valid, but not so much in a general way, but in a very specific way.

If you are thinking that UV is responsible for the use and placement of calicum. That I would have to suggest you look at particular events in a monitors life.

When is calicum in most demand? when would it be more important? With young animals that are growing? reproductive females? adults that are not progressing? Old individuals?? In my mind, the needs of these are all entirely different.

My opinion is, that the use of UV was thought important, because of the failure of monitors in improper conditions and the lack of understanding of a successful monitor husbandry reqime.

In other words, in order to understand the use of calicum, you need to ask more appropriate and specific questions. Thanks F
