THE BEST SUBSTRATE

marygr22 Aug 10, 2003 12:08 PM

OK, so I see that the main topic here is how to set up the tank just right for the horned frogs... I need ideas on how to set mine up where it is safe, clean, and looks attractive. I need all the help I can get, so tell me how you have yours... pictures would be wonderful!! Thanks to all who reply!!

I am going to go and get a product called "Bed a Beast", and I believe that petsmart sells it. I hear that even if the frog ingests it, he is still fine. I also hear that it is not hard to clean. I hear that bed a beast is by far the best substrate. I need to change mine to it, so I recommend that you get it.

I have no pic, but I will explain my horned frogs' seperate tanks.
Each frog has its own 20-gallon-sized long tank. There are a few inches of forest bed (coconut fiber) substrate, enough so the frogs can bury themselves fully. There are water bowls in each tank (the larger femals has one big bowl, the smaller male gets two because he is smaller and the tank is big.) Each bowl is recessed into the substrate, so the frogs have an easier time of entering/exiting. Each tank has backgrounding on 3 sides to provide "privacy" and security.
I don't use heat lamps; the temp in my frog room is always correct for them. I really don't think they require lighting anyway, being buried all the time. The natural light from the window is sufficient. Never plave the tank in the direct path of sunlight, though; you could have Baked Frogs! Please don't get an undertank heat pad; frogs bury themselves to cool off in warm weather, and that defeats the purpose, plus it ges WAY too hot.
Any more questions, ask away!
