West TX July 27-31

I took my younger brother with me on my second trip to west Texas. I went out before in may and didn't have a good trip then or now as far as snake hunting goes, but still had fun though both times. I'll be going again probably next Thurs through Sun, and I'd like to know who else will be out next week. Anyway here's what we saw (though not much):

Sunday- No live Snakes!
1- D.O.R. Central TX Whipsnake (My brother thinks we should abolish the term D.O.R. and replace it with "Road Art" )
1- Solfugid wind scorpion
1- Couch's spadefoot
1- Cliff chirping frog
some bark scorpions/tarantulas/millipedes
The mammals were out in full force!

Monday- Absofreakinlutely NUTHIN!

Tuesday-
1- Mt. Patchnose Snake under a board (very cool!)
1- longnose live on road
2- atrox live on road
1- hypsiglena live on road

Weds-
4- road art unidentified snake skeletons
1- road art shell (turtle/tortoise?) It was pretty smashed
4- atrox live on road
1- Tiny lepidus live on road (has to be less than 1 year old)
1- mollosus
3- hypsiglena live on road (One we had to fend off a giant owl to catch. It was pretty cool!)
We were stopped at dusk by the Brewster county game warden tonight. He just asked for my drive/hunt liscenses, went back to his car, wished us luck, and sent us on our way. He didn't care that we were hunting from the car, and since Greg was just "riding along", he didn't even ask for his liscense. The dude seemed pretty cool with it.

My brother seems to kind of be into this stuff now so maybe he'll come out again some time.

Awesome Lepidus!! I wish I knew a good place to go collecting or I would be out all night every night! Do you know of anything in Southern California? Does anybody? Thanks!

I know what it's like to not have a clue where to go or how to find snakes. Actually my mother was an avid birder when she was younger and got me hooked on reptiles, but didn't know a whole lot about them. Actually the East Texas Herp Society helped because the meetings are an accumulation of other, more experienced herpers and their knowledge. So... i would reccomend this: go to www.socalherp.org and join your own herp society if you haven't already. Go to all the meetings and talk to everyone you can. Maybe even get someone to take you herping with them. If someone doesn't want to share their "secret spots" with you, find someone who's not as selfish. I'm sure you'll find the info you need. Also the socal herp page has e-mail adresses to quite a few of it's members, so that might help.
Good Luck,
Brandon Bowers
