Asian rat id please?

Iriri Jan 24, 2007 10:43 PM

I posted this also in the Asian Rat Snakes forum. If crossposting is not allowed, I apologize (and please let me know if I'm in the wrong).

A friend gave me this rat snake. It came in as an oddball in a shipment of red-tail rats from China or something; at least, that's what the person he got it from told him.

If anyone can identify the snake for me, please let me know. I don't think it's a Gonyosoma frenatum, G. oxycephalum, or G. prasina, but I could be wrong. This is my first experience with an Asian rat snake, and it really doesn't match up with any pictures I'm finding.

If the pics aren't sufficient for ID purposes, please tell me what body parts you want better views of, and I'll get them photographed for you.

Sorry about the color issues, I was using different lighting than I normally do, and I won't be making THAT mistake again. :/

Snake has been identified as Cyclophiops major! Thanks so much!

Well,....it's neither "Gonyosoma", or "Elaphe". What it looks like you have there is what's known as a Asian Green Snake, also known as Chinese Green Snake from the genus(Eurypholis). Many workers prefer the name (Entechinus) over the other, as the name is sometimes confused with a fish.......it is one of eight subspecies native to S.E. Asia to Indo-China, over to Japan. Mostly found in damp bamboo forests. It feeds mainly on invertibrates, also including earthworms and frogs to their diet...........The one in your photo is probably(E.major)growing to about 40" long.......hope this helps...................Doug

Thank you so much Dinodon in the other forum had given me Cyclophiops as a genus, so I guess they've got a lot of aliases! The previous owner was feeding him frogs, and was confused as to why it wouldn't accept mice. Now I know! I'll be picking up some nightcrawlers and silkworms.

People like you and Dinodon remind me of why I love Kingsnake.com so much!

Thanks, it's a Sony DSC-707. I used a light box to get some good shots. She's very good-natured, so she posed nicely for me (My Bairdi gets a little annoyed with me in the light box).

She is doing great--eating nightcrawlers like crazy. She seemed rather relieved to see them in her food dish! "Oh, good, the apes finally figured out what I wanted!"
