Newbie to Frogs Questions

Geckofanatic23 Jan 25, 2007 12:16 AM

Hey everyone, I've always wanted to try caring for a species of tree frog. My local areas seem to have only whites, cubans, and greens. I want a frog suitable for a beginner that is one of the easier species to care for. The largest tank I have right now is a 20 galon tall. i also have lots of spare ten gallons. What would be a good species to try? i especially like the greens and cubans. Also, what do you guys use as substrate for your frogs? Besides that, I understand most tree frog care Thanks a bunch for any help1

I am fairly new to frogs so I may not have the best answer but the frogs I have that I enjoy the most are my Big Eye Tree Frogs (Leptopelis vermiculatus). (There are other common names for these too.) The males are a very pretty green with little black lines when young. Some stay green while others are brown and green or just brown as they mature. The females from what I have read always are, or turn, brown shades and are much larger in the long run. Mine are calling all the time (not constantly though), which I enjoy (but I don't recommend them for a bedroom). They start to get active quite a while before the lights go out, although they are basically nocturnal. They are fun to watch as they jump around the tank. I have fed them from forceps, but they don't always want to do that (unlike the White's Tree Frog!). I hear they are quite durable. Usually not expensive. Eat well. They also are not as fast or easily stressed into jumping as some others.

For a 20 gallon, I would go with the green tree frog or one white's tree frog. (don't know much about cubans, could probably place one in there as well... um not all three frogs though lol just one) basically you have the choice of which you would like the most. Each of them are fairly easy to take care off. Don't place any of those frogs in your ten gallons though, that's just too small.

As for substrate, use cocofibre, like bed a beast. It is fairly easy to digest if accidentally swallowed and if kept moist there shouldn't be any problem at all. Plus you can plant in it.

Really, for the frogs, the choice is yours. Go with what you like and what you can afford. Head over to www.talkto.thefrog.org for good caresheets or information on those frogs.

I like my green tree frogs, mine don't spook easily and i can kinda pick them up and they will sit on my finger when i have to move them, most may not but i have raised these from tads so they may be tamer, i like the cocofiber stuff as well, i have a layer of perilite under the cocofiber and it makes for a good humidity lever. i have 4 young green in the large stand up terrarium that exoterra makes, works well. enjoy whatever species you get.

I agree with everything Daystorm just said. Especially about only using the 20 gal tank. Remember only one species per tank, ever. You could do 1 whites or 2 greens in a 20 gal.

As you are experienced in other reptiles you already know that you need a temp and humidity gauges and also a water dish. Also don't believe anything that says you don't need heat for them, get good caresheets. try talkto.thefrog.org

Personally I'd go with a Whites, they seem to have such personalities as compared to the other frogs. I have red eyes, they are really boring!
